How to interpret water test results
“Oxygen: 6.2 mg/l. Is that good?” This is one of the most common questions after a water test - and there is no simple answer to it without context. A single number only gains meaning when you set it against three reference points: the standard, the background and the trend.
Three reference points
- The standard / guideline - does the result fall within values considered acceptable or within a given status class (see Classes and status of water quality).
- The background / reference values - what is “normal” for this specific water; the same number can be typical for one watercourse and alarming for another (see Reference values and background).
- The trend - is the result rising, falling, or within the usual variability (see Time-series analysis).
Each of the three reference points answers a different question - and none replaces the others:

⚠️ A single measurement has no trend and no background - only a standard. The first result from a new station can therefore be compared only against a permissible value, and full interpretation begins at a dozen or so measurements. That is not a flaw of the method but a reason to start measuring before a problem appears.
Context, without which it is easy to err
- Time of day and season - many indicators have a daily and annual rhythm; low oxygen at dawn is something different from in the afternoon.
- Weather - rainfall, temperature and wind explain many “anomalies” (see combining with public data).
- Links between indicators - indicators are read together (e.g. high temperature ↔ low oxygen; high nutrients ↔ bloom ↔ a fall in transparency).
A single measurement is only the beginning
The most important rule: one reading is rarely enough. An anomaly is confirmed by the next measurement or by context; a status assessment is built by a series, not a snapshot.

Interpretation is easier when the standard, the background and the trend are in one place.
