Amphibian monitoring - counts in the breeding season and at crossings

The first warm, damp nights of spring draw a remarkable group of people into the field: with torches, in wellies, bent over a ditch or beside a fence along a road, carrying toads and frogs to the other side. The monitoring and protection of amphibians is one of the most “human” of nature studies - built on the dedication of park rangers, herpetologists, volunteers and whole local communities. Their patient, often nocturnal work saves thousands of animals and gives a picture of how our wetlands are faring.

For amphibians are a sensitive indicator of the state of the environment - and their spring migrations to breeding sites are the moment when they are easiest to count and to help. This is by nature a team and field study: the sites and fence sections are staffed by many people at once, at night, without signal. That makes it all the more valuable for the numbers from the whole group to flow into one shared place, rather than drowning in a dozen notebooks and messages.

How it is counted

The most common approaches:

  • Counts at breeding sites - species and numbers (individuals, pairs, strings/spawn) in the water body, at fixed dates.
  • Protective fences along roads (the “toad patrol”) - along the barrier amphibians are counted and carried across, recording species, number, often direction and sex.
  • Breeding-call surveys - identifying species by their calls.

The equipment is above all a torch, an identification key, buckets at the fences and a sheet for recording - species and number on a given section/site on a given date.

Step by step

  1. Designate fixed sites / fence sections and assign them to people.
  2. Conduct checks during the migration season, at the right time (warm, damp evenings/nights).
  3. Record species + number (at fences also direction and sex), plus the weather.
  4. At fences, carry the animals safely to the other side.
  5. Sum up the sections into a picture of the whole site and repeat at fixed dates.

What the result means

Species composition and numbers, tracked year after year, show the condition of populations and the importance of a place for amphibians - and the scale of the threat at roads. A single night is a snapshot; a series of seasons is real knowledge that supports protection (e.g. a decision on permanent wildlife crossings).

The most common mistakes

  • The wrong time/weather - on cold, dry nights the migration dies down.
  • Inconsistent sites/sections - the results stop being comparable.
  • Scattered notes from many people - it is easy to make mistakes and double-count.
  • Omitting the weather - it makes the swings harder to interpret.

How often

At the peak of the spring migrations, frequently (even every night at the fences), otherwise according to the programme. What matters is fixed sites, the same method and comparable dates.
