Counting waterbirds - how to conduct and record it
A winter dawn over a flooded meadow, frost nipping at the fingers, and through the spotting scope one flock after another drifts past - and someone counting, in deep concentration, whispers “…forty-eight, fifty…”. Counting waterbirds has something of a ritual to it: it calls for patience, a trained eye and often a whole team of observers who, at an agreed hour, take up their posts across the sectors of a great wetland. Ornithologists, monitoring-programme volunteers, bird lovers - it is one of the largest and most devoted communities of nature observers, and their numbers form a priceless picture of how our waters and wetlands are faring.
It is also a study in which cooperation and a field without signal are written into the very method. Large water bodies are divided into sectors counted simultaneously by several people, so that the same birds are not counted twice. And all of this happens where phone signal is a distant memory. That makes it all the more valuable for the numbers to flow into one shared place - without the laborious merging of slips of paper afterwards.
How it is counted
The most common approach is counts in fixed sectors / points or along transects:
- observers count birds by species (and with large flocks - estimate the numbers),
- on extensive water bodies the count is conducted simultaneously, to avoid double counting,
- at fixed dates (e.g. counts of wintering waterbirds, seasonal checks).
The equipment is above all binoculars and a spotting scope, an identification key/app and a sheet for recording - species and numbers in a given sector and on a given date.
Step by step
- Divide the water body into fixed sectors and assign them to observers.
- Count at an agreed hour, simultaneously (crucial with mobile birds).
- Record species + numbers for your sector, plus conditions (weather, visibility, water level).
- After the count, sum up the sectors into a single result for the whole site.
- Repeat at fixed dates - the value comes from a comparable series.
What the result means
Numbers and species composition, tracked over time, show the importance of a site for birds and the changes - seasonal and over many years. A single count is a snapshot; a series is a picture of how the wetland “works” through the cycle of the year and across years. Much depends on the weather and water level, so it is worth recording them together.
The most common mistakes
- A lack of simultaneity on a large water body - the double counting of mobile flocks.
- Inconsistent sectors/dates - the results stop being comparable.
- Omitting the conditions (weather, water level) - the swings are harder to understand.
- Scattered notes from several observers - it is easy to make mistakes when merging.
How often
At fixed dates according to the programme (e.g. monthly checks, winter counts). What matters most is the same sectors, the same time of day and a comparable method.
