Fish monitoring - electrofishing step by step

Wading in the current with the team, in full concentration - one person leads the anode, others net the stunned fish, someone records species and length, and then everything returns to the water. Electrofishing is one of those methods where you can see that studying nature is sometimes a shared undertaking: it calls for coordination, trust and a good division of roles. The ichthyologists, monitoring staff, students and research teams who carry it out do a stretch of hard but fascinating work

  • because fish will not tell you about the state of the river until someone counts them.

It is a method of enormous value: the composition and abundance of the fish community is one of the biological indicators of the state of waters. And because electrofishing usually takes place on remote river reaches in the field - without signal - and usually with several people, it is also a fine example of a study where good data organisation gives the most: one shared record instead of several notebooks that then have to be painstakingly merged.

What it involves

Electrofishing uses an electric field (anode + cathode) that temporarily stuns the fish, allowing them to be netted, identified, measured and safely released. It is used to assess the fish community - species, numbers, size structure.

⚠️ This is a method that requires licences, permits and training as well as safety discipline (electricity in water). It is carried out only by appropriately prepared teams.

Roles in the team

Here cooperation is written into the method:

  • the operator leads the rig (a backpack unit in wadeable streams, a boat unit on larger rivers),
  • the netters catch the stunned fish into containers,
  • the recorder notes down species, lengths and weights,
  • the others see to holding the fish and their safe return to the water.

How it proceeds - step by step

  1. Choose a representative reach and set its boundaries (sometimes with stop nets).
  2. Select the device’s parameters and make systematic passes of the reach.
  3. Net and gather the stunned fish into containers of water.
  4. Identify the species, measure lengths and weights, record - efficiently, because the fish are waiting to be returned.
  5. Release the fish back.
  6. From the data calculate the community metrics (species richness, numbers, structure) and - if the methodology requires it - the appropriate index.

What we record

Most often: species, numbers, length, weight, assigned to the reach/pass and the date. It is from this raw data that the indicators of status are later built.

The most common mistakes

  • An unrepresentative reach - an atypical fragment distorts the picture of the community.
  • Too hasty identification - species mistakes and lost time at the fish’s expense.
  • Scattered notes - with several people it is easy to record inconsistently and lose records.
  • A lack of method consistency - you can only compare surveys conducted the same way, in the same place.

How often

Cyclically, on fixed reaches and under comparable conditions - according to the adopted monitoring schedule. The repeatability of the site and the method matters more than the frequency.
